Airfield and marine warnings issued as strong wind hits UAE

Dubai: The Dubai Met Office on Monday issued airfield and marine warnings as winds of 30 knots blew up dust across the emirates, whipping up about 9 feet waves offshore.

At the Dubai Airport the winds were fluctuating between 33 km/ph and shooting up to 55 km/ph, according to the duty forecaster. "At these speeds things can get blown around," he said, but added that it did not affect flights as visibility was good.

Jebel Ali was the worst affected. “There is a regular sandstorm going on there (at around 12pm),” said the duty forecaster. Visibility at the new airport was down to less than 1,000 metres.

It is because of strong north-westerly winds, but it has helped bring down the temperature to 40 degree Celsius and the comfort index to "reasonably comfortable".

The gusty winds will die down on Tuesday and will "not be as bad as today", the duty forecaster said. The temperature will climb one notch to 41 degree Celsius.

“People are realizing there is no escape from the heat of summer,” he said.

The wind speed and visibility levels across the UAE on Monday:

Abu Dhabi - 19 knots, 2,800 metres
Sharjah - 21 knots, 3,000 metres
Dubai - 18-30 knots, 7,000 metres
Jebel Ali - 20-30 knots, 1,000 metres
