വാഷിങ്ടണ്: ചന്ദ്രനില് ആളെയിറക്കി ലോകത്തെ വിസ്മയിപ്പിച്ച 'നാസ'യ്ക്ക് അതിന്റെ വീഡിയോ ദൃശ്യങ്ങള് സൂക്ഷിച്ചുവെക്കാന് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലെന്ന ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്ന വിവരം പുറത്തുവന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. 'മാനവരാശിയുടെ കുതിച്ചുചാട്ട'മായി വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട ചാന്ദ്രയാത്രയുടെ വീഡിയോദൃശ്യങ്ങള് പുനഃസൃഷ്ടിക്കാന് ഹോളിവുഡിലെ വിദഗ്ധരുടെ സഹായം തേടേണ്ടിവന്നൂ അമേരിക്കയുടെ വിഖ്യാത ബഹിരാകാശ ഏജന്സിക്ക്. മനുഷ്യന് ചന്ദ്രനിലിറങ്ങിയതിന്റെ നാല്പതാം വാര്ഷികം തിങ്കളാഴ്ച ആഘോഷിക്കാനിരിക്കേ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം പുറത്തുവിട്ടത് ഇങ്ങനെ പുനര്നിര്മിച്ച വീഡിയോയാണ്.
'വീഡിയോ ടേപ്പു'കള്ക്ക് ക്ഷാമം വന്നപ്പോള് ചാന്ദ്രയാത്രയുടെ ദൃശ്യങ്ങള് മായ്ച്ചുകളഞ്ഞ ടേപ്പ് വീണ്ടുമുപയോഗിക്കുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്നാണ് യഥാര്ഥ വീഡിയോ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിന് നാസ നല്കുന്ന ന്യായീകരണം.
നാസയിലെ സീനിയര് എന്ജിനീയര് ഡിക് നാഫ്സ്ഗര് പര്യവേക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ യഥാര്ഥ വിഡിയോദൃശ്യങ്ങള്ക്കായി മൂന്നു വര്ഷം മുമ്പ് നടത്തിയ അന്വേഷണത്തിലാണ് ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്ന വിവരം പുറത്തുവന്നത്. ചന്ദ്രനില് നിന്ന് അയച്ച ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെയും വിവരങ്ങളുടെയും വിപുലശേഖരമുള്ക്കൊള്ളുന്ന 45 വന് ഫിലിം റീലുകള് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതായി അദ്ദേഹം കണ്ടെത്തി.
ടേപ്പുകള് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിന് നാസ അധികൃതര് നിരത്തിയ ന്യായമായിരുന്നു വിചിത്രം. 1970കളിലും 80കളിലും നാസയ്ക്ക് ആവശ്യമായ വീഡിയോ ടേപ്പുകള് കിട്ടിയിരുന്നില്ലത്രെ. പുതിയ കാര്യങ്ങള് ലേഖനം ചെയ്തുവെക്കാന് ദൃശ്യങ്ങള് മായ്ച്ചുകളഞ്ഞ് പഴയ ടേപ്പുകള് വീണ്ടും ഉപയോഗിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. രണ്ടു ലക്ഷത്തോളം ടേപ്പുകളാണ് നാസ ഇങ്ങനെ പുനരുപയോഗിച്ചത്. ശാസ്ത്രലോകത്തെ കുതിപ്പിന്റെ അമൂല്യദൃശ്യങ്ങളും ഇക്കൂട്ടത്തില് നഷ്ടമായി.
ലോകം മുഴുവന് അദ്ഭുതാവേശത്തോടെ വീക്ഷിച്ച ആ ചരിത്രസംഭവം അന്ന് തത്സമയം സംപ്രേഷണം ചെയ്തത് നാഫ്സ്ഗറുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലായിരുന്നു. അപ്പോളോ 11ല് നിന്നയച്ച വിവരങ്ങള് മാത്രമുള്ള ടേപ്പുകളാണെന്ന് കരുതിയാവും അവ നശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടതെന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നത്.
നാസയ്ക്ക് ചീത്തപ്പേരായെങ്കിലും ഹോളിവുഡ് വിദഗ്ധര് ഇടപെട്ടതിനു ഗുണമുണ്ടായി. നീല് ആംസ്ട്രോങ് ചന്ദ്രനില് കാല്കുത്തുന്നതും എഡ്വിന് ആല്ഡ്രിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പിന്തുടരുന്നതും ഒടുവില് അമേരിക്കന് പതാക ചന്ദ്രോപരിതലത്തില് നാട്ടുന്നതും ഉള്പ്പെടെയുള്ള ദൃശ്യങ്ങള് കൂടുതല് വ്യക്തതയോടെയും മിഴിവോടെയുമാണ് പുനര്നിര്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. കാസബ്ലാന്ക, സിംഗിങ് ഇന് ദ റെയ്ന്, ദ റോബ്, റൈഡേഴ്സ് ഓഫ് ദ ലോസ്റ്റ് ആര്ക് തുടങ്ങിയ വിഖ്യാത സിനിമകള് പുനഃസൃഷ്ടിച്ച കമ്പനിയായ ലൗറി ഡിജിറ്റലാണ് ഈ ചരിത്രദൗത്യം ഏറ്റെടുത്തത്. ചാന്ദ്രയാത്രയുടെ 40 ശതമാനം ജോലികള് പൂര്ത്തിയായപ്പോള് തന്നെ ഏകദേശം ഒരു കോടി രൂപയോളം ചെലവുവന്നു.
തത്സമയ സംപ്രേഷണത്തിന്റെ റെക്കോഡ് ചെയ്ത കോപ്പികള് പലയിടങ്ങളില് നിന്നായി ശേഖരിച്ചാണ് 'ലൗറി ഡിജിറ്റല്' ചാന്ദ്രദൗത്യത്തിന്റെ ദൃശ്യങ്ങള് വീണ്ടെടുത്തത്.
1969-ലെ ചാന്ദ്രദൗത്യം തട്ടിപ്പു മാത്രമായിരുന്നുവെന്ന പ്രചാരണങ്ങള്ക്ക് കൂടുതല് ശക്തി പകരുന്നതാണ് നാസയില് നിന്നുള്ള പുതിയ വാര്ത്ത. ശീതയുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ നാളുകളില് റഷ്യയെ മുട്ടുകുത്തിക്കുന്നതിനായി അമേരിക്ക ഹോളിവുഡ് സെറ്റില് കൃത്രിമമായി ചിത്രീകരിച്ച ദൃശ്യങ്ങള് പുറത്തുവിടുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്ന പ്രചാരണം അന്ന് വ്യാപകമായിരുന്നു. ഇന്നും ഈ വാദവുമായി നടക്കുന്നവരുണ്ട്
എന്നാല് പഴയ ദൃശ്യങ്ങള് അതേപോലെ പുനര്നിര്മിക്കുകയല്ലാതെ പുതുതായി യാതൊന്നും കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്ത്തില്ലെന്നാണ് ലൗറി ഡിജിറ്റല് അധികൃതര് പറയുന്നത്.

മത്സര പരീക്ഷകള്ക്ക് വനിതാ ഉദ്യോഗാര്ത്ഥികള് ഇനി ഫീസടയ്ക്കേണ്ട
ന്യൂഡല്ഹി: ജോലിക്കുവേണ്ടിയുള്ള മത്സര പരീക്ഷകളില് പങ്കെടുക്കാന് വനിതാ ഉദ്യോഗാര്ത്ഥികളില്നിന്ന് ഫീസ് വാങ്ങേണ്ടെന്ന് കേന്ദ്രസര്ക്കാര് തീരുമാനിച്ചു. യൂണിയന് പബ്ലിക് സര്വീസ് കമ്മീഷന്, സ്റ്റാഫ് സെലക്ഷന് കമ്മീഷന് എന്നിവ നടത്തുന്ന പരീക്ഷകള്, നേരിട്ടുള്ള നിയമനത്തിന് നടത്തുന്ന പരീക്ഷകള് എന്നിവയ്ക്കാണ് ഫീസ് ഒഴിവാക്കുന്നത്.
ജോലിനേടാനുള്ള പരീക്ഷകളില് സ്ത്രീകളുടെ പങ്കാളിത്തം വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാനുളള ശ്രമത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണിത്. വിവിധ മന്ത്രാലയങ്ങളിലെ സെക്രട്ടറിമാര്, യു.പി.എസ്.സി, സ്റ്റാഫ് സെലക്ഷന് കമ്മീഷന് എന്നിവര്ക്ക് സര്ക്കാര് ഇതുസംബന്ധിച്ച കത്തയച്ചുവെന്ന് വാര്ത്താ ഏജന്സി റിപ്പോര്ട്ട് ചെയ്തു.
വിവിധ സെലക്ഷന് ബോര്ഡുകളില് വനിതാ പ്രാതിനിധ്യം ഉറപ്പു വരുത്തണമെന്നും സര്ക്കാര് നിര്ദ്ദേശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. വിവിധ തസ്തികകളിലേക്ക് നടത്തുന്ന നിയമനങ്ങളില് വനിതാ പ്രാതിനിധ്യം ഉറപ്പുവരുത്താന് നടപടി സ്വീകരിക്കണമെന്നും വിവിധ മന്ത്രാലയങ്ങള്ക്ക് സര്ക്കാര് നിര്ദ്ദേശം നല്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇതുസംബന്ധിച്ച റിപ്പോര്ട്ട് ആഗസ്ത് 31 നകം സമര്പ്പിക്കാനാണ് നിര്ദ്ദേശം.
ജോലിനേടാനുള്ള പരീക്ഷകളില് സ്ത്രീകളുടെ പങ്കാളിത്തം വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാനുളള ശ്രമത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണിത്. വിവിധ മന്ത്രാലയങ്ങളിലെ സെക്രട്ടറിമാര്, യു.പി.എസ്.സി, സ്റ്റാഫ് സെലക്ഷന് കമ്മീഷന് എന്നിവര്ക്ക് സര്ക്കാര് ഇതുസംബന്ധിച്ച കത്തയച്ചുവെന്ന് വാര്ത്താ ഏജന്സി റിപ്പോര്ട്ട് ചെയ്തു.

സാനിയയുടെ വീട്ടില് അതിക്രമിച്ച് കയറിയ മലയാളി പിടിയില്
ഹൈദരാബാദ്: പ്രണയം തലയ്ക്കുപിടിച്ച് ടെന്നിസ് താരം സാനിയ മിര്സയുടെ വീട്ടിലെത്തി വിവാഹ നിശ്ചയം മാറ്റിവയ്ക്കണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് ബഹളം വച്ച് മലപ്പുറം സ്വദേശിയെ പോലീസ് അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തു. മലപ്പുറം മഞ്ചേരി സ്വദേശി മുഹമ്മദ് അഷ്റഫാണ് (28) പ്രണയം മൂത്ത് പോലീസ് കസ്റ്റഡിയിലായത്.
കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം രാത്രി സാനിനയുടെ ബംജാര ഹില്സിലുള്ള വീട്ടിലെത്തിയ മുഹമ്മദ് അഷ്റഫ് ബലം പ്രയോഗിച്ച് അകത്തുകയറി സാനിയയുടെ വിവാഹനിശ്ചിയം വേണ്ടെന്നു വയ്ക്കണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് ബഹളം വയ്ക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. താന് സാനിയയുമായി ഏറെ നാളായി പ്രണയത്തിലായിരുന്നെന്നും മുഹമ്മദ് സാനിയയുടെ അച്ഛന് ഇമ്രാന് മിര്സയോട് പറഞ്ഞു.
സിവില് എഞ്ചിനീയറിങ് വിദ്യാര്ഥിയായ മുഹമ്മദ് അഷ്റഫ് സാനിയയോട് ഫോണ് വഴി പ്രണയാഭ്യര്ഥന നടത്തുകയും തുടന്ന്് വിവാഹം കഴിക്കണമന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. അതിനുശേഷമാണ് വീട്ടിലെത്തി ബഹളം വച്ചത്. ഇമ്രാന് മിര്സയുടെ പരാതിപ്രകാരം പോലീസ് ബംജാര ഹില്സിിലെ വീട്ടില് പിക്കറ്റ് ഏര്പ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നു.
ബാംഗ്ലൂരില് വച്ച് ആദ്യമായി സാനിയയെ നേരില്കണ്ട മുഹമ്മദ് അഷ്റഫ് പിന്നീട് തുടര്ച്ചയായി ഫോണ് ചെയ്യുകയും എസ്.എം.എസ് സന്ദേശങ്ങള് അയക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. സാനിയയുടെ വിവാഹം ഉറപ്പിച്ചതോടെ ഇയാളുടെ സ്വഭാവം മാറി. ഭീഷണിയുടെ സ്വരത്തിലായിരുന്നു പിന്നീടുള്ള ഫോണ്കോളുകള്. ഇതിനുശേഷമാണ് ഇമ്രാന് മിര്സ പോലീസില് പരാതി നല്കിയത്.
പോലീസ് നിരവധി കേസുകള് ചാര്ജ് ചെയ്ത മുഹമ്മദ് അഷ്റഫിനെ ഇന്ന് ഹൈദരാബാദിലെ കോടതിയില് ഹാജരാക്കി. ജൂലായ് പത്തിനാണ് സാനിയയുടെ വിവാഹനിശ്ചയം നടക്കുന്നത്.

തീവ്രവാദം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതും വളര്ത്തിയതും പാകിസ്താന്:സര്ദാരി
ഇസ്ല്ളാമാബാദ്:ചെറിയ നേട്ടങ്ങള്ക്കായി ഭീകരവാദികളേയും തീവ്രവാദികളേയും സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതും ഊട്ടിവളര്ത്തിയതും പാകിസ്താനാണന്ന് പാക് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ആസിഫ് അലി സര്ദാരി.
മുതിര്ന്ന സിവില് സര്വീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുമായി നടത്തിയ ഒരു കൂടിക്കാഴ്ചയിലാണ് സര്ദാരി ഇക്കാര്യം തുറന്നു പറഞ്ഞത്. സപ്തംബര് 11 സംഭവത്തിന് ശേഷം ആ തീവ്രവാദികള് പാകിസ്താനെ വേട്ടയാടാന് തുടങ്ങിയെന്നും സര്ദാരി പറഞ്ഞു.
തീവ്രവാദികളും ഭീകരവാദികളും പാകിസ്താനില് ഉദയം ചെയ്തത് ഭരണകൂടം ദുര്ബലമായതുകൊണ്ടല്ല. താല്ക്കാലിക നേട്ടങ്ങള്ക്കായി അവരെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുക എന്ന നയമായിരുന്നു പാകിസ്താന് സ്വീകരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഈ യാഥാര്ത്ഥ്യം നാം അംഗീകരിക്കണം. 9/11 ന് ശേഷം അവര് നമ്മെ വേട്ടയാടാന് തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോഴാണ് ഇന്നലെ വരെ ഹീറോകളായ അവര് നമുക്ക് തീവ്രവാദികളായത്. അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.
തീവ്രവാദത്തിനെതിരെയുള്ള യുദ്ധത്തില് പാകിസ്താന് മുന്നില് നില്ക്കണമെന്നും ഇത്തരം പുഴുക്കുത്തുകളെ സമൂഹത്തില് നിന്നും ഇല്ലായ്മ ചെയ്യണമെന്നും സര്ദാരി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.

ഐഐഎം പ്രവേശനത്തിനായി അനുവര്ഷം നടത്തിവരുന്ന പൊതുപരീക്ഷ (ങ്കക്കസ്സ: കോമണ് അഡ്മിഷന് ടെസ്റ്റ്) മത്സരപരീക്ഷകളുടെ ഗണത്തില് ദേശീയതലത്തില് ഏറെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. കിടമത്സരമുള്ള ഇൌ പരീക്ഷയില് ഉയര്ന്ന റാങ്ക് സമ്പാദിക്കണമെങ്കില് അതീവ ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ ചിട്ടയൊപ്പിച്ചു പരിശീലിച്ചേ മതിയാകൂ. ഇൌ രംഗത്തു പരിശീലനം നല്കുന്ന വിദഗ്ധരുടെ സഹായമുണ്ടെങ്കില് എഴുത്തുപരീക്ഷയിലെന്നപോലെ ഗ്രൂപ്പ് ചര്ച്ച, ഇന്റര്വ്യൂ എന്നിവയിലും മികവു കാട്ടുന്നതിന് ആവശ്യമായ നിര്ദേശങ്ങള് ലഭിക്കും. ഏതു മത്സരത്തിലും നല്ല നിലയില് ജയിക്കണമെങ്കില് അതിന്റെ സാങ്കേതികവശങ്ങള് ഗ്രഹിച്ച്, അനുരൂപമായ തന്ത്രങ്ങള് സ്വായത്തമാക്കണം.

ഇൌ വര്ഷത്തെ ക്യാറ്റ് കംപ്യൂട്ടര് രീതിയിലായിരിക്കും. കടലാസും പെന്സിലും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഉത്തരമടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന രീതി പിന്തള്ളിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു. ആഗോളതലത്തില് ബിസിനസ് സ്കൂള് പ്രവേശനത്തിന് ഉപയോഗിച്ചുവരുന്ന ജിമാറ്റ്, ഗ്രാജുവേറ്റ് സ്കൂള് പ്രവേശനത്തിനുള്ള ജിആര്ഇ, ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഭാഷാ പ്രാവീണ്യം വിലയിരുത്തുന്ന ടോഫല് തുടങ്ങിയ പല പരീക്ഷകളും ഇപ്പോള് കംപ്യൂട്ടര് രീതിയെയാണ് ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നത്.

ന്യൂഡല്ഹി: പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയുടെ പതിനഞ്ചിന പരിപാടിയില് ഉള്പ്പെടുത്തിയ ന്യൂനപക്ഷ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സ്കോളര്ഷിപ്പിന് അപേക്ഷ ക്ഷണിച്ചു. മെട്രിക്കുലേഷന് വരെയുള്ളത്, മെട്രിക്കുലേഷനു ശേഷമുള്ളത്, പ്രഫഷനല് വിദ്യാര്ഥികള്ക്കുള്ളത് എന്നിങ്ങനെ മൂന്നു സ്കീമുകളിലായി ന്യൂനപക്ഷ വിദ്യാര്ഥികള്ക്ക് അപേക്ഷ നല്കാം. വരുമാനപരിധിയുണ്ട്.
കേരളത്തിലെ മുസ്ലിം - ക്രിസ്ത്യന് വിദ്യാര്ഥികള്ക്കു സ്കോളര്ഷിപ്പിന്റെ പ്രയോജനം ലഭിക്കും.

2. മെട്രിക്കുലേഷനു ശേഷം: പത്താം ക്ളാസ് പഠനം പൂര്ത്തിയായി ടെക്നിക്കല് - പ്രഫഷനല് കോഴ്സ് ഒഴികെയുള്ള കോഴ്സുകള്ക്കു പഠിക്കുന്ന ന്യൂനപക്ഷ വിദ്യാര്ഥികള്ക്ക് അപേക്ഷിക്കാം. തലേവര്ഷത്തെ വാര്ഷിക പരീക്ഷയ്ക്ക് 50% മാര്ക്ക്
നേടിയവരും രക്ഷിതാക്കളുടെ വാര്ഷിക വരുമാനം രണ്ടുലക്ഷം രൂപ കവിയാത്തവരുമായവര്ക്ക് അപേക്ഷിക്കാം. 30% പെണ്കുട്ടികള്ക്കായി നീക്കിവച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ വര്ഷം കേരളത്തില്നിന്ന് 51,415 പേര്ക്കു സ്കോളര്ഷിപ്പ് ലഭിക്കും. കഴിഞ്ഞതവണ 13,018 പേര്ക്കാണു ലഭിച്ചത്. കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്ഷം സ്കോളര്ഷിപ്പ് ലഭിച്ചവര്ക്ക് ഇത്തവണ പുതുക്കാന് അപേക്ഷ നല്കാം.
3. പ്രഫഷനല് കോഴ്സുകള്ക്ക്: ടെക്നിക്കല് - പ്രഫഷനല് കോഴ്സുകള്ക്കു പഠിക്കുന്ന ന്യൂനപക്ഷ വിദ്യാര്ഥികള്ക്ക് ഈ വിഭാഗത്തില് അപേക്ഷിക്കാം. യോഗ്യതാ പരീക്ഷയ്ക്ക് 50% മാര്ക്ക് നേടിയവരും രക്ഷിതാക്കളുടെ വാര്ഷിക വരുമാനം 2.5 ലക്ഷം രൂപ കവിയാത്തവരുമായവര്ക്ക് അപേക്ഷിക്കാം. 30% സ്കോളര്ഷിപ്പുകള് പെണ്കുട്ടികള്ക്കായി നീക്കിവച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ വര്ഷം കേരളത്തില്നിന്ന് 1469 പേര്ക്കു സ്കോളര്ഷിപ്പ് ലഭിക്കും.

Torch of Olympic hope kindled
Dubai: Senior sports officials have reacted enthusiastically after Dubai's ambitious plans to attract the 2020 Olympic Games were revealed on Sunday.
Ebrahim Abdul Malek, secretary general of the General Authority of Youth & Sports Welfare, said hosting the Olympics was the "ultimate ambition" of any country while former world powerboat champion Saeed Al Tayer welcomed the "fantastic opportunity for Dubai to further establish itself in the international sporting arena".
Yesterday, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, issued a decree setting up a committee to explore the potential of Dubai to host the Olympic and Paralymic Games in 2020 as part of the Dubai 2020 initiative.
"The Dubai 2020 initiative will look at how we can shape our environment and society for future generations," Shaikh Mohammad said in an official statement released from his office.
"It will address, in an integrated way, the building blocks that underpin social and economic progress - sport, education, culture, business, science, technology, health and the environment.
Two global events - the Olympic Games and World Expo - give us a sense of common purpose and play to our strengths."
The 2020 Olympic Games committee will be chaired by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, while Shaikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, head of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) will be the vice-chairman.
Abdul Malek hoped the vision of Shaikh Mohammad will help Dubai edge out other leading cities to become a genuine contender to host the Games.
"The Olympics is the biggest sporting event in the world and is the ultimate sporting ambition of any country," he told Gulf News.
"Bidding for the Games will mean a lot of work and preparation in terms of planning and developing infrastructure. But the UAE has been successful in hosting big events and with the support of our leaders we can hopefully make a successful bid."
Al Tayer, chairman of the UAE's iconic new horseracing development, Meydan racecourse, agreed with Abdul Malek.
"Dubai has a wealth of know-how in organising major events and has already established itself internationally," he said.
"This [Olympic bid] is a continuation of the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad.
"We have seen dreams and aspirations being realised in the past and this can also be achieved."
Leading UAE endurance rider and long distance runner Ali Al Muhairi said the proposed Olympic bid "is a matter of pride for the people of the UAE and a huge motivation for all sportspersons", while UAE hockey captain Ahmad Al Sayegh believes the emirates can be a strong candidate.
"We have all the ingredients that are essential to host the Olympics such as political stability, a great environment and sport loving people," Al Sayegh said.
"We have shown to the world how much a small country can achieve and we can continuing achieving."

Etisalat enters India, sets up back office at Ambattur in North Chennai
CHENNAI: UAE based telecommunications service provider Emirates Telecommunications or Etisalat has quietly begun work on its entry into the Indian
market, by setting up a back office operations centre at the India Land Properties’ IT park – India Land Tech Park, at Ambattur in Chennai. This 500-seater technical centre with a 50,000 sq. ft. built up area will be the company’s first office set up in India.

Sharjah committee to monitor food poisoning
Sharjah: The municipality will soon form a Food Poisoning Committee in order to prevent food poisoning cases from breaking out in Sharjah.
Atif Abdullah Al Zarouni, Director of Public Health Department, Sharjah Municipality, told Gulf News that the municipality is currently co-ordinating with the Ministry of Health and the Forensic Laboratory of Sharjah Police to launch the committee.
"We are co-ordinating with all the parties so that we can adopt a mechanism among all parties to form a Food Poisoning Committee in Sharjah. Through the new committee, we aim to control such situations [of food poisoning] as soon as possible," said Al Zarouni.
"The Department deals with cases of suspected food poisoning in the most accurate manner. We first conduct an investigation of the type of food intake, then we collect food samples, and finally we review the staff who prepared the food to make sure they are free from diseases and wounds."
He stated that there are more than 7,000 food outlets in Sharjah and that five per cent of them were fined recently, due to the negligence of public or personal hygiene, in addition to failing to adhere to correct health practices when dealing and preparing food products.
In a three-week inspection campaign held in May, three shawarma cafeterias and 1,294 food outlets were temporarily closed because they were operating in areas polluted by vehicle emission and air microbes.
Cafeterias were also found to be selling stale meat that was unfit for human consumption.
"The municipality has intensified its preventive measures to protect food commodities from being contaminated during the summer season, and we are focusing on restaurants and butcher shops," he said, emphasising that inspectors also supervise the sterilisation of fast food meals, vegetables, salads, fruits and other food items.
Al Zarouni pointed out that restaurants and cafeterias should use proper equipment, such as electric knives instead of ordinary knives, and that employees should adhere to the standards of personal hygiene when dealing with food items prior to cooking.
"Food control inspectors do not spare any efforts to educate workers in these areas as we want them to deal with food items in a sound manner."

Michael Jackson dies of cardiac arrest in Los Angeles
Los Angeles: Michael Jackson, the "King of Pop" who once moonwalked above the music world, died Thursday as he prepared for a comeback bid. He was 50.
Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center after being stricken at his rented home in Holmby Hills. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his home for nearly three-quarters of an hour, then rushed him to the hospital, where doctors continued to work on him.
"It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known," his brother Jermaine said. Police said they were investigating, standard procedure in high-profile cases.
Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album "Thriller" - which included the blockbuster hits "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" - is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.
At the time of his death, Jackson was rehearsing hard for what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July 13.
As word of his death spread, MTV switched its programming to play videos from Jackson's heyday. Radio stations began playing marathons of his hits.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital. In New York's Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying the news to friends by cell phone.
"No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow," Michael Harris, 36, of New York City, read from a text message a friend had sent him. "It's like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died."
The public first knew him as a boy in the late 1960s, when he was the precocious, spinning lead singer of the Jackson 5, the singing group he formed with his four older brothers out of Gary, Indiana. Among their No. 1 hits were "I Want You Back," "ABC" and "I'll Be There."
He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his backward-gliding moonwalk, his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched singing, punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks, as was his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.
"For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words," said Quincy Jones, who produced "Thriller." "He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."
Jackson ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the biggest pop sensations of all time. He united two of music's biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie, and Jackson's death immediately evoked comparisons to that of Presley himself, who died at age 42 in 1977.
As years went by, Jackson became an increasingly freakish figure - a middle-aged man-child weirdly out of touch with grown-up life. His skin became lighter, his nose narrower, and he spoke in a breathy, girlish voice.
He often wore a germ mask while traveling, kept a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles as one of his closest companions, and surrounded himself with children at his Neverland ranch, a storybook playland filled with toys, rides and animals. The tabloids dubbed him "Wacko Jacko."
"It seemed to me that his internal essence was at war with the norms of the world. It's as if he was trying to defy gravity," said Michael Levine, a Hollywood publicist who represented Jackson in the early 1990s. He called Jackson a "disciple of P.T. Barnum" and said the star appeared fragile at the time but was "much more cunning and shrewd about the industry than anyone knew."
Jackson caused a furor in 2002 when he playfully dangled his infant son, Prince Michael II, over a hotel balcony in Berlin while a throng of fans watched from below.
In 2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying the boy with alcohol and groping him, and of engaging in strange and inappropriate behavior with other children.
The case followed years of rumors about Jackson and young boys. In a TV documentary, he acknowledged sharing his bed with children, a practice he described as sweet and not at all sexual.
Despite the acquittal, the lurid allegations that came out in court took a fearsome toll on his career and image, and he fell into serious financial trouble.
Michael Joseph Jackson was born Aug. 29, 1958, in Gary. He was 4 years old when he began singing with his brothers - Marlon, Jermaine, Jackie and Tito - in the Jackson 5. After his early success with bubblegum soul, he struck out on his own, generating innovative, explosive, unstoppable music.
The album "Thriller" alone mixed the dark, serpentine bass and drums and synthesizer approach of "Billie Jean," the grinding Eddie Van Halen solo on "Beat It," and the hiccups and falsettos on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'."
The peak may have come in 1983, when Motown celebrated its 25th anniversary with an all-star televised concert and Jackson moonwalked off with the show, joining his brothers for a medley of old hits and then leaving them behind with a pointing, crouching, high-kicking, splay-footed, crotch-grabbing run through "Billie Jean."
The audience stood and roared. Jackson raised his fist.
By then he had cemented his place in pop culture. He got the plum Scarecrow role in the 1978 movie musical "The Wiz," a pop-R&B version of "The Wizard of Oz," that starred Diana Ross as Dorothy.
During production of a 1984 Pepsi commercial, Jackson's scalp sustained burns when an explosion set his hair on fire.
He had strong follow-up albums with 1987's "Bad" and 1991's "Dangerous," but his career began to collapse in 1993 after he was accused of molesting a boy who often stayed at his home. The singer denied any wrongdoing, reached a settlement with the boy's family, reported to be $20 million, and criminal charges were never filed.
Jackson's expressed anger over the allegations on the 1995 album "HIStory," which sold more than 2.4 million copies, but by then, the popularity of Jackson's music was clearly waning, even as public fascination with his increasingly erratic behavior was growing.
Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley in 1994, and they divorced in 1996. Later that year, Jackson married Deborah Rowe, a former nurse for his dermatologist. They had two children together: Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., known as Prince Michael, and Paris Michael Katherine Jackson. Rowe filed for divorce in 1999.
Cardiac arrest is an abnormal heart rhythm that stops the heart from pumping blood to the body. It can occur after a heart attack or be caused by other heart problems.
Billboard magazine editorial director Bill Werde said Jackson's star power was unmatched. "The world just lost the biggest pop star in history, no matter how you cut it," Werde said. "He's literally the king of pop."
Jackson's 13 No. 1 one hits on the Billboard charts put him behind only Presley, the Beatles and Mariah Carey, Werde said.
"He was on the eve of potentially redeeming his career a little bit," he said. "People might have started to think of him again in a different light."
Fans in shock, tears
In Malaysia, they hoped he would be remembered like Princess Diana. In Mexico, one of his impersonators said part of his life had been torn away.
Even Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called it "lamentable news," though he criticized the media for giving it so much attention.
Michael Jackson's death Thursday in Los Angeles prompted broadcasters from Sydney to Seoul - where the news came early Friday - to interrupt morning programs, while fans worldwide remembered a "tortured genius" whose squeals and moonwalks captivated a generation and sparked global trends in music, dance and fashion.
Within minutes of Jackson's arrival by ambulance at UCLA Medical Center, people began arriving by the hundreds outside. As word spread that he was dead, people burst into tears. Others stood in disbelief.
In Sydney, where Jackson married second wife Debbie Rowe in 1996, a celebrity publicist who was a guest at Jackson's Sydney wedding and worked on his Australian tour that year described him as a "tortured genius."
"He was very gentle, very quiet, very shy," Di Rolle told Sky News television. "He was a very complicated, strange man, women loved him and men loved him too. It's such a sad day, a very sad day."
Australia's morning shows devoted full coverage to the Jackson's death, alternating reporting from Los Angeles with viewers' e-mails of memories and condolences.

Dubai residents gather to mourn for Neda
Dubai: Close to one thousand Iranian residents gathered in Dubai for a silent candle-lit vigil on Monday to mourn the killing of Neda Agha Sultan, the woman who has become the symbol of the movement contesting the Iranian presidential election results.

The group gathered on the beach next to the Hilton hotel in Jumeirah Beach Residence holding candles and posters. While most of the posters showed pictures of Neda, few were of political slogans calling for Iran's "freedom."
Neda, 26, was shot dead in Tehran on Saturday during a rally protesting the perceived rigging of the presidential elections held earlier this month, allegedly by forces affiliated with the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Footage of the killing was leaked to news websites and has been widely circulated since.
Dubai Police had said earlier that no protest rallies would be permitted, saying that a possible counter rally could lead to clashes. The authorities have expressed concern that violence in Iran could spill into Dubai.
Many of those present pointed out that the gathering was not intended to be a protest rally, but a silent vigil free of slogans and chants. A speech in support of Neda was read and Persian songs were sung. Mourners wept as their arms swayed in the air with the singing.
A woman, who did not want to be named, said she had not attended any rallies or protests in Dubai in support of former reformist presidential candidate Mir Hussain Mousavi, but was "woken up" after the "brutal" death of Neda.
Attendees were also keen to point out that they did not oppose the Iranian regime, but its alleged corruption, as well as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
An Iranian resident, Mahmoud, who read a poem for Neda, said he was opposed to "tyranny, and not the Islamic Republic."
A number of attendees also noted that Iranians inside and out of their country had become bolder by the opposition movement, citing their new confidence in speaking to media without worrying about hiding their identities.
"That's because they know Ahmadinejad's government won't last long," Mahmoud said. Few however, expressed opposition to the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the regime in Tehran.
"Politics is dirty, when you bring religion into politics, you're putting it in dirt," Schahin, a German-Iranian resident of Dubai, said. "Once [the leaders] claim they come from God, they are invincible," he added.
Schahin and others acknowledged deep splits within the opposition movement, with some protesting the conservative movement and Ahmadinejad, and others contesting the entire regime. Schahin said the priority was to remove Ahmadinejad, which united both parties.
"For me, it was a choice between the bad and the worse, and I chose the bad: Mousavi," he added, noting the former prime minister's conservative record.

Ahmadinejad asks Obama not to interfere in Iran
Tehran: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on Barack Obama on Thursday not to interfere in Iran's internal affairs after the US president said he was "appalled and outraged" by post-election violence.
Iran's tough security crackdown after its disputed June 12 presidential election has led Obama to ramp up his previously muted criticism of the Islamic Republic.
"Mr Obama made a mistake to say those things...our question is why he fell into this trap and said things that previously former US President George W. Bush used to say," the semi-official Fars News Agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.
"Do you want to speak with Iran with this tone? If that is your stance then what is left to talk about," said Ahmadinejad, who won the election by a landslide according to official results. His moderate opponents say the vote was rigged.

The turmoil in Iran has dimmed prospects for Obama's engagement with Tehran over its nuclear programme, with Ahmadinejad's government blaming Britain and the United States for fomenting violence.
"I hope you avoid interfering in Iran's affairs and express your regret in a way that the Iranian nation is informed of it," Ahmadinejad said.
He was speaking in the port town of Assaluyeh, where he was inaugurating a petrochemical plant.
Since taking office Obama has made diplomatic overtures towards Iran, after three decades of severed ties and a standoff over Tehran's nuclear drive.
But as the unrest has mounted in Iran over the disputed presidential election that returned Ahmadinejad to power, Obama has been increasingly critical of the vote and the crackdown on opposition protesters.
In his most recent comments, Obama said there were significant questions about the election results and that he "appalled and outraged" by the violent suppression of the protests.
The Washington Times reported on Wednesday that Obama's administration wrote to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei before the election offering to improve relations.

Los Angeles: KFC and some customers are embroiled in a beef over a free meal that never came to be.
In May, the fast-food chain promoted a giveaway of two pieces of grilled chicken, two individual side dishes and a biscuit on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Demand was so high that the company had to scale back the offer, asking customers who had printed the online coupons to visit stores for an IOU voucher that included a free Pepsi.
James Asanuma and Veronica Mora were feeling so peckish that they filed suit against KFC and its parent company, Yum Brands, in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday and are seeking class-action status.
The complaint accuses KFC of false advertising, fraud and unfair business practices, among other things. The company, according to the suit, used the promotion to pluck money from customers who hadn't intended to spend any.

KFC spokesman Rick Maynard said he couldn't comment on the lawsuit. But he said, "We apologise to any customers who were inconvenienced, and we remain committed to providing a free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal plus a medium soft drink to those who submitted valid coupons for replacement coupons."
According to the complaint, Asanuma used a colour printer and paper to print four coupons, which required him to download and install a special computer program.

Dubai Police warn residents to take care of possessions
Dubai: A spokesperson for Dubai Police has warned the public against leaving valuable items in their cars as there has been a slight increase in car-related thefts.
According to the spokesperson from the police's criminal investigation department, the public should be more cautious and responsible regarding the items they keep in their cars.
He said that there had been "quite an increase" in the number of laptops stolen from unattended cars, saying that for every 100 cars, there was a possibility of one car having items stolen from it. He advised people to put their laptops in the car boot since they would then not be visible or, alternatively, just to carry the laptops with them.
He also said people should never leave their engines running while they are away from their cars.

Simple mistakes could lead to severe repercussions and in most cases the stolen items take a long time to recover, he said.
Car owners who want to sell their vehicles should accept a cash payment instead of a cheque, which could turn out to be fraudulent, it was advised.
The police also said residents could take advantage of the household protection service offering those residing in villas the option of monitoring their houses while they are out of the county.
The programme was introduced in 2001 with around 200 people annually registering online, said Lieutenant-Colonel Jamal Al Jallaf, Director of the criminal monitoring department.

UAE government prepares to create more jobs
Dubai: The UAE government is working to prepare the job market for the post global financial crisis period by drafting plans to develop value-added economic sectors and develop small- and medium-sized enterprises to create more jobs, said the Minister of Labour at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) summit on the global employment crisis.
Saqr Gobash Saeed Gobash told the gathering at the ILO summit in Geneva on the global employment crisis that "despite the difficulties, we see this crisis as an opportunity to reconsider the priorities of national economies, including our own national economy. We should move ahead with developing value-added economic sectors in accordance with our federal government's strategy.

"We should also focus on developing small and medium-sized enterprises to create job opportunities for our citizens and to attract skilled foreign labour."
To execute such plans requires closer cooperation between the UAE and its partners, including the GCC and Arab countries and the Asian labour source countries and to make good use of the expertise of the relevant international organisations, according to Gobash.
"I am looking forward with particular interest to the issuing of the final report of the committee formed by this summit to enable us to identify new areas for cooperation between the UAE and the ILO," said Gobash.
The global financial crisis has had a direct impact on the economy and labour market in the UAE but its effect has been limited on the UAE job market, according to Gobash.
Gobash said the unemployment rate in the UAE workforce, where the majority are expatriates, will not increase in the context of the global financial crisis.
Upon the emergence of the early signs of the crisis, the UAE Federal Cabinet took important proactive and preventive measures which have mitigated the impact of the crisis.
Thus the government pumped sufficient liquidity into the banking sector, ultimately amounting to $33 billion (Dh121.19 billion), and guaranteed all deposits in national and foreign banks operating in the country up to the end of 2013, Gobash said.
"It is not anticipated that unemployment rates will increase among the UAE workforce, the majority of whom are expatriates.
"What is anticipated is a slowdown in the rate of arriving workers, coupled with a slight increase in the number of those who leave the country on completion of the projects for which they were brought.
"It is also expected that access by UAE citizens to the job market in the private sector will be faced with some challenges, given the fact that dwindling growth rates will limit the creation of lucrative job opportunities in this sector," said Gobash.
More than 660,000 labour cards were issued between October 2008 and March 2009 and only 405,000 cards were cancelled, indicating an average monthly growth of 43,000 in the UAE labour force, according to the ministry's statistics.
However, there are no available statistics for the period after March.

Emirati students face swine flu quarantine

New procedures are being implemented by the UAE authorities. Medical teams will be sent to UAE embassies in affected countries such as the US and Australia to screen students using thermal scanners.
The move comes after an increasing number of GCC students abroad were diagnosed with swine flu.

Humaid Al Qutami, Minister of Education, told Gulf News students suspected of carrying the H1N1 virus will be quarantined. "This will reassure everyone and prevent panic until all students studying abroad have been checked, especially those coming from the US, Australia, Canada and Europe, where the majority of UAE students are," Al Qutami said.
There are 600 Emirati students studying abroad under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education, and four times the number of students studying on scholarships from other parties, such as government and semi-government authorities, banks, rulers' courts and private companies.
Dr Hanif Hassan, Minister of Health, told Gulf News the ministry is coordinating with the National Committee for Combating Swine flu.
"We will ask embassies to provide the committee with records about UAE students and tell us about suspected cases ... in order to isolate them and treat them before coming back to the UAE.
"We will contact their families and let them know all the details about these preventive procedures," Hassan said.
Neighbouring Oman has declared three cases of H1N1. "Three Omani students returned to Muscat last Saturday after a year-long course at a US University and all three have been found to be carrying the H1N1 virus," a spokesperson at the Ministry of Health told Gulf News.Are you an Emirati studying abroad? ഇസ്രായേലിനെതിരെ കര്ശന നടപടി സ്വീകരിക്കാത്തതില് അറബ്^മുസ്ലിം ലോകം ഒബാമയെ വിമര്ശിക്കുന്നു. നല്ലൊരു വിഭാഗം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പ്രതിക്കൂട്ടില് കയറ്റുകതന്നെ ചെയ്യുന്നു. എന്നാല് ഇസ്രായേലിനോട് ഒബാമ എന്ത് നയം സ്വീകരിക്കണമെന്നു ചോദിച്ചാല് വിമര്ശകരും കുഴങ്ങും. ഉത്തര കൊറിയയോട് സ്വീകരിച്ചതുപോലുള്ള നയമാണോ? എങ്കില് ഉത്തരകൊറിയയെപോലെ തന്നെ ഇസ്രായേലും അമേരിക്കയോട് ഇടഞ്ഞ് താന്തോന്നിത്തം കാട്ടിയാലോ? ഒബാമക്കെന്ത് ചെയ്യാനാവും? അമേരിക്കയും ഇസ്രായേലുമായുള്ള ചരിത്രപരമായ ബന്ധം, ബുഷിന്റെ എട്ടുകൊല്ലത്തെ ഇസ്രായേലി പക്ഷപാതനയം, ഇസ്രായേലി തീവ്രവാദികളുടെ പടയൊരുക്കം^ ഇതെല്ലാം കണക്കിലെടുക്കുമ്പോള് ഒബാമക്ക് പരിമിതിയുണ്ട്. ഈ പരിമിതി അദ്ദേഹമല്ല, മുന്ഗാമികള് സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതാണ്. മുമ്പ് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ്സാമ്രാജ്യത്വവും പിന്നീട് അമേരിക്കന്സാമ്രാജ്യത്വവും ചെയ്തുകൂട്ടിയ അന്താരാഷ്ട്രീയ കുറ്റകൃത്യങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു ബീഭല്സരൂപമാണ് ആണവായുധമേന്തി നില്ക്കുന്ന ഇസ്രായേല്. അന്ന് ജനിക്കുക കൂടി ചെയ്യാത്ത ഒബാമ അതിന്റെ ഭാരം പേറുന്നത് എങ്ങനെ? ആ കുറ്റങ്ങളുടെ വിശിഷ്യ ബുഷിന്റെ പ്രതിവിധിയും പരിഹാരവും സമര്പ്പിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടാണല്ലോ അമേരിക്കന്ജനത ബഹുഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തോടെ ഒബാമയെ വൈറ്റ്ഹൌസിലെത്തിച്ചത്.
വൈറ്റ്ഹൌസിലെ ഇക്കഴിഞ്ഞ 138 ദിവസങ്ങള്ക്കിടയില് ഇസ്രായേലിനോട് കേവലപക്ഷം പിടിച്ചും ഫലസ്തീനികളോട് നിശേãഷം വിവേചനം കാണിച്ചും ഒരു സമീപനം ഒബാമ സ്വീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ എന്ന് പരിശോധിക്കുക. പക്ഷപാതരഹിതവും വസ്തുനിഷ്ഠവുമായ അത്തരമൊരു വിശകലനത്തിലൂടെമാത്രമേ ഒബാമയെ നിഷ്പക്ഷമായി വിലയിരുത്താന് കഴിയൂ.അന്തിമവിശകലനത്തില് പുറമേനിന്നുള്ള ഒരു ശക്തിക്കും ഒരു പരിഹാരവും അടിച്ചേല്പിക്കാന് സാധ്യമല്ലെന്നും ഫലസ്തീനികളും ഇസ്രായേലികളും തമ്മില് തന്നെ (മാധ്യസ്ഥ്യത്തിലൂടെയും മറ്റും) പരിഹാരം കണ്ടെത്തേണ്ടി വരുമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം 'പ്രതീക്ഷയുടെ ധാര്ഷ്ട്യ'ത്തില് സൂചിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആ ദുഷ്കരകൃത്യം നടത്തിനോക്കാനുള്ള ഉദ്യമത്തിലാണ് ഒബാമയെന്ന് കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ടുമൂന്നാഴ്ചകളിലെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നീക്കങ്ങള് ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു. മെയ് 18ന് ഇസ്രായേല് പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ബെഞ്ചമിന് നെതന്യാഹു വൈറ്റ്ഹൌസിലെത്തി. അദ്ദേഹവുമായുള്ള കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച ഒബാമയുടെ മുന്പരിപാടിയനുസരിച്ചുള്ള ഒരു മണിക്കൂറില് നിന്ന് രണ്ടു മണിക്കൂറിലേക്ക് നീണ്ടു. ദ്വിരാഷ്ട്ര പരിഹാരം, കുടിയേറ്റ പാര്പ്പിട നിര്മാണങ്ങളില് നിരുപാധികമായ വിട്ടുവീഴ്ച^ ഈരണ്ടു വിഷയങ്ങളും വിട്ടുവീഴ്ചയില്ലാത്ത സ്വരത്തില് ഒബാമ നെതന്യാഹുവിനോട് പറഞ്ഞു. 'ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചത് നേടാന് താങ്കള് ദൃഢതീരുമാനമെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നുവെന്നതിന് സംശയമില്ല. ഞാന് താങ്കളെ കേള്ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്, മിസ്റ്റര് പ്രസിഡന്റ്'^എല്ലാം കേട്ടുകഴിഞ്ഞ് നെതന്യാഹുവിന്റെ കമന്റ് അതായിരുന്നു.
അന്ന് ടി.വിയില് ആ കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച വീക്ഷിച്ച ആര്ക്കും നെതന്യാഹുവിന്റെ നിസ്സഹായാവസ്ഥ തെളിഞ്ഞുകാണാം. കാണാന് കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. വൈറ്റ് ഹൌസിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തില് ഏതെങ്കിലുമൊരു അമേരിക്കന്പ്രസിഡന്റില് നിന്ന് ഏതെങ്കിലുമൊരു ഇസ്രായേലി പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിക്ക് ഇത്ര അരോചകമായ അനുഭവമുണ്ടായതായി അറിയില്ല. ഇസ്രായേലിലെത്തിയ നെതന്യാഹു അതൊക്കെ പുല്ലുവിലയാക്കി എന്നത് വേറെ കാര്യം.പത്തുദിവസം കഴിഞ്ഞ് മെയ് 28ന് മഹ്മൂദ് അബ്ബാസ് വൈറ്റ്ഹൌസ് സന്ദര്ശിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് ഒബാമ അടിവരയിട്ടു പറഞ്ഞു: 'യാത്രക്കും വ്യാപാരവിനിമയത്തിനും വിഘാതമായി ഫലസ്തീനികള് അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന സമ്മര്ദങ്ങള്ക്ക് ഇസ്രായേല് അറുതിവരുത്തണം.. ഒരു ഫലസ്തീന്രാഷ്ട്രം ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുകയും വേണം.'കെയ്റോയിലേക്ക് പുറപ്പെടും മുമ്പായി ഒബാമ കുറെ അഭിമുഖങ്ങള് നല്കി. അതിലെല്ലാം അദ്ദേഹം മേല്പറഞ്ഞ പോയന്റുകള് ആവര്ത്തിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. കെയ്റോ പ്രഭാഷണത്തിലാകട്ടെ, ഗസയിലെ തുടരുന്ന 'മാനുഷിക പ്രതിസന്ധി' അദ്ദേഹം അപലപിച്ചു. 'ഫലസ്തീനികളുടെ ദൈനംദിന ജീവിതത്തിലെ പുരോഗതി സമാധാനത്തിലേക്കുള്ള മാര്ഗത്തിന്റെ അവിഭാജ്യ ഘടകമാവണം. അത്തരം പുരോഗതി സാധിതമാവാനുള്ള ഉറച്ച നടപടികള് ഇസ്രായേലെടുക്കണം... ഇസ്രായേലിന്റെ തുടരുന്ന കുടിയേറ്റ നിര്മാണങ്ങളുടെ നിയമാനുസൃതത്വം അമേരിക്ക അംഗീകരിക്കുകയില്ല...'മുമ്പത്തെ കരാറുകളെ ലംഘിക്കുകയും സമാധാനം നേടാനുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങളെ തകര്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു ഈ (പാര്പ്പിട) നിര്മാണം.' അറബികളേയും ഫലസ്തീനികളേയും അതേ സ്വരത്തിലും ശക്തിയിലും ഒബാമ ശകാരിച്ചു. അതേതായാലും അമേരിക്ക ഇസ്രായേലിന്റെ മേല് ഇത്ര ശക്തിയായ സമ്മര്ദം ചെലുത്തിയ അനുഭവം മുമ്പുണ്ടായതായി ഓര്ക്കുന്നില്ല.ജൂണ് 8ന് എ.ബി.സിയുമായി നടത്തിയ അഭിമുഖത്തില് ഹിലരി ക്ലിന്റന് ഒബാമയെ ഏറ്റുപിടിച്ചു : 'കുടിയേറ്റ ഭവന നിര്മാണം നിര്ത്തുകയെന്നത് ഇസ്രായേല് കൂടി ഒപ്പുവെച്ച റോഡ്മേപ്പിന്റെ അവിഭാജ്യഘടകമാണ്'.
ഇതൊക്കെ കേവലം ഡിപ്ലോമസിയും തേനൂറുന്ന വാക്കുകളുമായി പറഞ്ഞുതള്ളുന്നവര് ധാരാളമുണ്ട്. പക്ഷേ, ഒബാമ കൂടുതലെന്ത് ചെയ്യണമെന്നതിന് അവരുടെ പക്കല് പ്രായോഗിക നിര്ദേശങ്ങളൊന്നുമില്ല. അദ്ദേഹം വാക്കുകള് പാലിക്കുമോ എന്നാണ് ചോദ്യമെങ്കില് അതിന് സമയം കൊടുക്കണമല്ലോ. അതിനുമുമ്പ് വിധിയെഴുതുന്നതിലെന്തര്ഥം? കെയ്റോ പ്രഭാഷണത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് വിമര്ശങ്ങള് സംഗ്രഹിച്ച ശേഷം ടൊറന്റോ സ്റ്റാര് എഡിറ്റര് ഹാറൂന് സിദ്ദീഖി പറഞ്ഞു: 'ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും അലട്ടുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്ക്ക് പരിഹാരം തേടാന് രണ്ടും കല്പിച്ചിറങ്ങിത്തിരിച്ചിരിക്കയാണ് ഒബാമ എന്നതില് സംശയമില്ല.'
ഫലസ്തീന്^ഇസ്രായേല് സംഘര്ഷത്തില് ആത്യന്തികനിലപാടുകള് ഇരുഭാഗത്തുമുണ്ട്. ജൂത തീവ്രവാദത്തിന്റെ രൂക്ഷരൂപം വെസ്റ്റ് ബാങ്കിലെ ഹെബ്രോണ് സന്ദര്ശിച്ച പശ്ചിമേഷ്യാ പത്രലേഖകന് ഓക്ലാന്റ് റോസ് വരച്ചുകാട്ടി. '2000 വര്ഷങ്ങളായി തങ്ങളുടെ ഭൂമിയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങാന് ജൂതര് സ്വപ്നം കാണുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോഴും ജൂതര് ആ ദിവസത്തിനായി പ്രാര്ഥിക്കുകയും സ്വപ്നം കാണുകയും ആവേശം കൊള്ളുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു^' അവിടത്തെ കുടിയേറിപ്പാര്പ്പുകാരന് നൊവാം അര്നോന് പറഞ്ഞു. ദൈവം ജൂതര്ക്ക് വാഗ്ദത്തം ചെയ്ത പ്രദേശമാണത്. ഇസ്രായേലിന്റെ മേല് എന്തുതരം അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര സമ്മര്ദമുണ്ടായാലും അവിടം വിടാനോ പാര്പ്പിടനിര്മാണങ്ങള് നിര്ത്താനോ കുടിയേറിപ്പാര്പ്പുകാര് തയാറല്ല. പാര്പ്പിടനിര്മാണം നിര്ത്താനുള്ള അമേരിക്കന് ആഹ്വാനത്തിനെതിരെ ഉറച്ചുനില്ക്കുന്ന നെതന്യാഹുവുമായി ഒരു സംഘട്ടനത്തിലാണ് ഒബാമ ഏര്പ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് ഓക്ലാന്റ് റോസ് പറയുന്നു. ഹെബ്രോണ് എന്ന ആ പഴയ നഗരത്തിലേക്ക് ഒരുകൂട്ടം പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തകരെ നയിച്ച നൊവാം അര്നോന് അറബികളെയും ജൂതരെയും വേര്പെടുത്തുന്ന ഒരു വികൃത കോണ്ക്രീറ്റ് മതിലിനുനേരെ ചൂണ്ടിക്കൊണ്ട് പറഞ്ഞു: 'ഇടതുഭാഗത്ത് ഒരു ഗേറ്റുണ്ട്. അറബികള്ക്കതിലൂടെ കടന്നുപോവാം. പക്ഷേ, ജൂതര്ക്ക് പാടില്ല. രണ്ടായിരം വര്ഷത്തോളം ജൂതരവിടെ താമസിച്ചു. 1927ല് അറബികള് ആക്രമിച്ചു, കൊലചെയ്ത് ഞങ്ങളെ പുറത്താക്കി. ഇപ്പോള് ഞങ്ങള് അവകാശം പുനഃസ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ലോകത്തൊരു ശക്തിക്കും ഞങ്ങളെ പുറത്താക്കാനാവില്ല'. ഇസ്രായേലി കുടിയേറിപ്പാര്പ്പുകാരുടെ മനോഗതിയാണിത്.
മറുവശത്ത് ഫലസ്തീന് മനോഭാവമോ? ഹമാസ് ഇസ്രായേലിന്റെ നിലനില്പ് അംഗീകരിക്കുന്നില്ല. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകള് പരമ്പരാഗതമായി തങ്ങള് വസിച്ച ഭൂമി ആക്രമിച്ച് കൈവശപ്പെടുത്തി സ്ഥാപിച്ച ഇസ്രായേല് രാഷ്ട്രത്തിന് നിലനില്ക്കാന് അവകാശമില്ല. ആ രാഷ്ട്രം ഭൂപടത്തില് നിന്ന് മായ്ക്കപ്പെടണം എന്ന ഇറാന്പ്രസിഡന്റ് മഹ്മൂദ് അഹ്മദി നജാദിന്റെ പ്രഖ്യാപനം കൂടി ചേര്ത്തുവായിക്കാം.ഈ രണ്ട് ആത്യന്തിക നിലപാടുകള്ക്കിടയില് വളരെ ഭിന്നമായ വീക്ഷണങ്ങള് പുലര്ത്തുന്ന വിഭാഗങ്ങള് മുസ്ലിംകളിലും ജൂതന്മാരിലുമുണ്ട്. ഇതിനിടയിലാണ് ഒബാമക്ക് മധ്യസ്ഥ ഭാഗം അഭിനയിക്കേണ്ടത്. ഫലസ്തീനികള്ക്ക് അനുകൂലമായി ഒരു വാക്കു പറഞ്ഞാല് ജൂത വിസ്ഫോടനം. ജൂതര്ക്കനുകൂലമായി വല്ലതും ഉരിയാടിയാല് മുസ്ലിം പ്രതിഷേധം. നിലവിലുള്ള ഈ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിന്റെ കണ്ണാടിയിലൂടെ വേണം ഒബാമയെ വിലയിരുത്തുക. അല്ലാത്ത വിലയിരുത്തലുകള് ഉന്നം തെറ്റും. ചരിത്രപരമായ വസ്തുതകളേയും നിലവിലുള്ള യാഥാര്ഥ്യങ്ങളേയും സ്ഥിതിഗതികളുടെ സങ്കീര്ണതകളേയും കണക്കിലെടുക്കാത്ത ഒരു സമീപനവും^ ഏതു ഭാഗത്തുനിന്നായാലും^ ഫലസ്തീനിലോ പശ്ചിമേഷ്യയിലോ സമാധാനം കൈവരുത്തുകയില്ല. ഫലസ്തീന് ഒരന്തിമ സംഘട്ടനത്തിലേക്ക് നീങ്ങുകയാണോ? ഖുദ്സിന്റെ അങ്കണത്തില് കുരിശുയുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ കുളമ്പടികള് മുഴങ്ങുകയാണോ? അല്ല, ഖുദ്സിനു മുകളില് സമാധാനത്തിന്റെ വെള്ളപ്രാവുകള് പറക്കുമോ? സമീപകാലത്തെ ഏറ്റവും ഉദ്വേഗജനകമായ ചോദ്യം. ലോകമെങ്ങുമുള്ള മനുഷ്യസ്നേഹികളുടെ കണ്ണുകള് സമാധാനപ്രാവുകളുടെ മേല് നട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
